For commercial and industrial businesses, C&I solar in Tanzania is becoming a practical route to more reliable power, lower operating risk and stronger long-term competitiveness. 1. Power reliability is now a commercial imperative

Decentralised power is becoming an increasingly important part of Tanzania’s energy landscape. For businesses operating outside the country’s major urban centres, access and reliability can directly influence where and how they operate. This is strengthening the case for businesses to supplement the grid with commercial solar PV and, where appropriate, battery storage.

Hydropower still dominates the grid, but renewable-driven diversification is at the heart of strategy. Off-grid renewable capacity has grown from 52.7 MW to 63.2 MW over the past decade. For a manufacturer, processor or agribusiness in rural Tanzania, grid unreliability is a direct business cost – measured in downtime, spoiled inventory and missed production targets. Solar paired with storage is no longer just a backup option; it can be an important foundation for growth.

2. Regional experience matters, but local context matters more

It is tempting to treat East African solar markets as interchangeable, but Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania can differ in grid stability, regulatory pathways, financing norms and the depth of the urban-rural divide. A C&I solar strategy designed around conditions in Nairobi cannot simply be replicated in Dar es Salaam, Arusha or at a processing facility in rural Tanzania.

The right approach starts with the individual business case. Load profile, grid conditions, operating hours, site constraints and financing priorities should determine how the system is designed. That requires reliable energy data, a detailed site assessment and financial modelling, followed by an operations and maintenance strategy suited to the local environment.

3. Expectations are evolving and the benchmark is getting higher

Tanzania’s C&I solar market is maturing. Businesses are investing in strong, stable and well-understood energy systems, motivated by both decarbonisation and financial performance. The panels must be fit for the long term, commercial agreements must be carefully structured and regional nuances must be resolved before construction begins.

This increases the importance of credible emissions measurement and lower-carbon production for businesses exposed to those markets.

Institutional credibility in Tanzania has long rested on hydropower. But as grid instability persists and export markets tighten their carbon requirements, the case for businesses to build resilient, decentralised power is no longer speculative; it is operational. The question for Tanzanian C&I businesses is not simply whether to consider solar, but how well the system is designed for their site and market.
